La serie Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (anche chiamata più brevemente Deep Space Nine, o ST:DS9 o DS9) nasce originariamente come spin-off di Star Trek: The Next Generation nel gennaio del 1993, due anni dopo la morte di Gene Roddenberry, avvenuta nel 1991 durante la produzione della quinta stagione di TNG.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine venne prodotta per sette stagioni, dal 1993 al 1999.

È la prima ed unica serie di Star Trek ad essere ambientata non a bordo di un'astronave ma all'interno di una stazione spaziale, Deep Space Nine appunto.

La stazione, comandata da Benjamin Sisko, è posta nello spazio del pianeta Bajor, ai turbolenti confini tra lo spazio della Federazione e quello dell'Unione Cardassiana, nei pressi di un tunnel spaziale stabile che conduce al remoto Quadrante Gamma della galassia.

Grazie a questo tunnel la Federazione si trova a fronteggiare uno dei suoi più temibili avversari: il Dominio.

La guerra contro il Dominio arriva a coinvolgere tutte le principali potenze dei quadranti Alfa e Beta e vede un'inedita alleanza militare tra Federazione, Klingon e Romulani.

Nell'arco finale della serie, oltre a molteplici colpi di scena, appaiono alcune delle più belle battaglie spaziali della fantascienza di quegli anni, grazie all'evoluzione della computer grafica.

La serie è stata trasmessa in Italia dalla tv "in chiaro" solo fino alla terza stagione.

Da capodanno 2007 LA7 ha ripreso a trasmettere, in orario notturno, episodi inediti in Italia di questa serie.
