Vent'anni dopo la prima serie televisiva, nel 1986, il produttore Gene Roddenberry decide che era il momento di riprovare a creare una serie che ne fosse il seguito, ambientandola però ben 78 anni dopo la serie originale, con un nuovo equipaggio e una nuova astronave.

Nasce così Star Trek The Next Generation (anche chiamata più brevemente The Next Generation, o ST:TNG o TNG).

I "viaggi della nave stellare Enterprise" mantengono la loro dimensione avventurosa, malgrado nel frattempo sia intervenuta la pace con i Klingon e l'allargamento della Federazione.

La tecnologia è più progredita; le navi della Flotta, come la nuova Enterprise, sono più grandi, comode e spaziose, con una funzione più marcatamente esplorativa e diplomatica, meno militare.

Agli ufficiali è permesso portare a bordo le proprie famiglie, dato che i periodi delle missioni si sono allungati.

L'esplorazione rimane la molla principale delle avventure, ma non mancano situazioni inedite che si sviluppano attorno al ponte ologrammi.

Più numeroso, complesso e articolato che nella serie originale, il gruppo di personaggi di The Next Generation è composto da ben otto protagonisti fissi, nessuno dei quali si può però considerare un vero e proprio comprimario.

Tra di essi spiccano il capitano Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), l'androide Data (Brent Spiner) e il comandante William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) .

Le avventure di Star Trek The Next Generation si sono sviluppate in 178 episodi (divisi in 7 stagioni) per la TV, per poi proseguire con quattro pellicole cinematografiche.

Trasmesso per la prima volta il 28 settembre 1987 con l'episodio pilota di due ore Incontro a Farpoint, ha riscosso subito un discreto seguito ed ha collezionato successi per sette stagioni.

La serie Star Trek The Next Generation è terminata con la doppia puntata Ieri, oggi, domani, trasmessa il 29 maggio 1994.

Anche il seguito di questa serie con il passare del tempo si è allargato ed essa è stata ampiamente ritrasmessa in collaborazione con altre reti televisive.
